Miguel Alfonso-Salas always wanted to start his own business. Back in his home country of Cuba, he attempted many times to start his own enterprise but always with limited success—the Cuban government had long-standing policies that outlawed small business activity. After waiting many years, Miguel managed to immigrate to the United States and apply for his green card in 2021.
He settled in Albuquerque, where he worked tirelessly to save money in the hopes that he might eventually achieve his dream of small business ownership. Despite several setbacks, such as a brief stint experiencing homelessness during which he lived out of his car, Miguel never lost sight of the bigger picture. He got back on his feet and found a job with a local cleaning company where he gained valuable knowledge of the industry, knowledge that would eventually inspire him to open his own cleaning business, “Five Star Cleaners LLC,” in the summer of 2024. Miguel worked with Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains to secure funding for his business and now has several commercial cleaning contracts in the Albuquerque area.
The ideal of economic independence is what drives small business owners to work their absolute hardest every single day, and Miguel is no exception. However, when Miguel speaks about the future of his business, he is also motivated by another dream, which is to hire more employees. Having first-hand experience of severe economic insecurity, he wishes to become a source of jobs in the community for those who are unemployed. Miguel believes deeply in equal opportunity and possesses a powerful sense of integrity and work ethic.
